Day 16 - Yoga

One of the "typical features" found in children with Down Syndrome is hyperflexibility.
Connor definitely has this characteristic as he is unbelievably flexible!  We love to do yoga together, but he is just so much better than me. He has the perfect form for many poses. Connor can be sitting on the floor, split his legs, lean down, touch his head to the floor and then somehow swing his feet out to the side to get them behind him and be completely on his belly. He can sit with his legs crossed in front of him and touch his head right down to the floor. I have been working on that one for years and despite all my practice still cannot make it happen.  Sometimes Connor even falls asleep in this position.

Now that we are talking about yoga I would like to share two other tricks that Connor is great at. From very early on Connor loved tummy time. When we started to encourage him to crawl, his favorite thing to do was what we called the “superman.” Connor would be on his belly and lift his legs up in the back and his head up in the front, he would have his arms behind him and rock as fast as he could. I think he thought if he did it long enough and strong enough he would take of flying =)

These pictures really don't do the move justice. It really is very funny and he continues to do it now even today. When you ask him to dance sometimes he drops right to his belly and dances in this way!

Connor loves to spend time on my exercise ball practicing yoga moves

Connor has now also mastered the Downward Dog position. Although he is not walking yet, he spends a lot of time on his hands and feet.
